Carrie Singleton is just about done with Clover Ridge, Connecticut until she's offered a job as the head of programs and events at the spooky local library, complete with its own librarian ghost. Her first major event is a program presented by a retired homicide detective, Al Buckley, who claims he knows who murdered Laura Foster, a much-loved part-time library aide who was bludgeoned to death fifteen years earlier. As he invites members of the audience to share stories about Laura, he suddenly keels over and dies.
The medical examiner reveals that poison is what did him in and Carrie feels responsible for having surged forward with the program despite pushback from her director. Driven by guilt, Carrie’s determined to discover who murdered the detective, convinced it’s the same man who killed Laura all those years ago. Luckily for Carrie, she has a friendly, knowledgeable ghost by her side. But as she questions the shadows surrounding Laura's case, disturbing secrets come to light and with each step Carrie takes, she gets closer to ending up like Al.

Now it's due or die for Carrie in Death Overdue the delightful first in a new cozy series by Allison Brook.

 Character Guest Post

Hi, there. My name is Jared Foster. I’m thirty years old, an accountant, and I’ve lived in the picturesque town of Clover Ridge, CT, all my life. My mom Laura was murdered fifteen years ago, when my older brother and I were in high school. I don’t have to tell you what a shock that was. The police never found the person who killed her. Rumor had it the detective on the case, Al Buckley, got nowhere because he was drinking heavily at the time. Still, Al was a great guy. He always found time to talk to me, and we kept in touch all those years. Recently, Al must have done some investigating, because word got around that he figured out who killed my mom. He planned to write a book about it. In fact, he arranged to talk about it at our local library.
That night, Al and I had a chance to catch up a bit before the program began. My brother interrupted us, saying some pretty nasty things to Al. Like he really didn’t know who killed our mother. He just wanted publicity for his book. Al remained calm and Brian left. A few minutes later the program started. A was talking about Mom, munching on cookies, when he suddenly keeled over and died. Right in front of us! Turns out he was poisoned.
Carrie Singleton, the new Head of Programs and Events, is as upset about Al’s death as I am. Carrie’s a really nice person. Pretty, too. She feels responsible because her boss wanted to cancel Al’s program and Carrie convinced her not to. Now we’re working together, trying to figure out who killed Mom and Al, because we think it’s a good possibility the same person committed both murders. We’re talking to everyone who knew Mom well. It’s been difficult for me. Some of things we’re finding out—well, they’re kind of upsetting. I’m beginning to wonder if it was a good idea to turn over this stone, or if we should have left things as they were.

A quick paced read with its humorous moments just in time for my favorite holiday season.
I am an admitted cozy mystery addict. I am a lifelong library geek - I love all they offer. Add in a ghost who helps solve crimes and I am hooked! I am also partial to an amateur sleuth solving cold cases, doing what the cops didn't figure out. This all combines to make me a very happy reader.
Should I add I WANT to like anything to do with Halloween and I was not disappointed.
