EXCERPT:
A soft mist hovered over the moonlit lake, beckoning, luring him forward with the seductive enticement of a mermaid’s song. Rhythmic clatter of a distant train moaned in harmony with a symphony of cricket chirps and croaking frogs. Spellbound, Nick Cramer took a long breath and waded deeper into the murky cove. Dank air, laden with a scent of soggy earth and pine, crawled across his bare arms. The hairs on the back of his neck bristled, shooting a prickle down his spine that slithered into an icy pool coiled in the pit of his stomach. He clenched his fingers into a tight fist, determined to fight through the emotion consuming him. Fear sliced through his belly like icy shards until he finally heaved, forcing rancid bile to choke into his throat.
I have to do this––he inched forward––only a few more steps and––
A sudden surge swirled around him, yanking him into a whirling vortex, where a violent blue streak dragged him deeper, deeper beneath the lake into the shadowy depths. Heart pounding, he battled against the force, twisting, thrusting toward the surface with all of his strength but, despite his muscular build, he spun like a feather in wind into oblivion. When the mist dissolved, Nick Cramer had vanished.

A Day In The Life Of Amber...

My name is Amber Reed. I spend my days doing admin work at the local newspaper The Palstone Courier and also make up the horoscopes for the weekly column in the paper under the fake name of Madam Zamber. I have zero astrology experience – how terrible is that? I hope people don’t go making any life changing decisions based on the horoscopes I created! Anyway, one particularly boring day I was wishing for some excitement in my life and then something really weird and kind of scary happened. Here’s my story...

“What kind of excitement are Gemini’s going to have this week?” I ponder, tapping my fingers against the keyboard.
I’m a third of the way through making up the horoscopes for this week’s local paper. Aries are going to get news of a fantastic job opportunity. Capricorns will receive some kind of windfall. But what about Gemini? I always like to give my Madam Zamber horoscope column an upbeat feel – after all, nobody reads their star signs to get depressed right?
My fingers hover over the computer keys as I debate on Gemini’s fate. I’m a Gemini so this one better be especially good; it’s been a rough week.
My phone, nestled somewhere in the depths of my bag, starts playing a chart tune at full volume. When I eventually find it I check the caller display and see Ennis’ name.
Ennis and I haven’t spoken for a while but I know he came home last week after he’d finished working on his latest movie, he sent me a text. He probably wants to meet for a coffee and a catch up. It’s strange; to me Ennis is, well, just Ennis. I don’t think of him as a heartthrob actor, just my ex, my university boyfriend, who I meet up with for a chat whenever he’s in Palstone.
Time for a little break from the horoscopes. I hit the answer button.
“Hi, how’s things?” I ask, leaning back in my chair.
There’s nothing but silence on the other end of the line.
“Ennis?” I sit up, instantly concerned. “Are you there? Is something wrong?”
His voice is so quiet I can barely hear him. “Joel’s dead,” he says.
“What?” I shout, leaping to my feet and earning myself a look of curiosity from the other two members of staff at The Palstone Courier.  I lower my voice. “How? What happened?”
“We don’t know yet,” he replies, his voice heavy with emotion. “But the police are saying he died in suspicious circumstances.”
I gulp. “You mean murder?”
“Look, Amber can you please come over?” Ennis says. “Now? Please? I need to ask you a huge favour.”
I grab my jacket and bag. “On my way.”
The drive to Ennis’ place feels like it’s taking forever when, in reality, I pull up outside the security gates in less than ten minutes. I push the Attention button on the keypad and Siobhan’s voice crackles through the intercom.
“It’s Amber,” I say nervously.
“Come through,” she replies in a cold voice. I imagine she isn’t pleased Ennis has called me to ask for a favour, whatever the circumstances might be.
Siobhan is Ennis’ girlfriend. I’m not her favourite person. I suppose it’s because Ennis and I were once an item and we still keep in touch.  He’s still got a special place in my heart, even after all these years.
I climb into my car and the huge metal gates start to slide open as I edge forward. Ennis’ house is set back from the road for privacy. He loves being an actor but struggles with the being famous side of things. He faces a constant battle, forever trying to fiercely guard his private life from the frenzy of paparazzi that follow him around.
My thoughts turn to the phone call and a thousand questions pop into my head.
Joel’s dead? When? Where? How did it happen? Why?
Joel is – sorry, was – Ennis’ younger brother. They didn’t get on and in the past year or so Joel had pretty much done everything possible to make Ennis’ life difficult. Which is why I was stunned when I’d had a text from Ennis last week saying we must catch up soon, and he’d also mentioned that Joel would be coming to stay for a few days.
If Joel was visiting and he’d been found dead then that means he’d died either here at Ennis’ house or pretty close by. The thought sends chills quivering through me.
This is a sleepy part of Derbyshire. We have fun runs, school fetes and jumble sales.

Not murders.

Danger and romance heat up the pages of this intriguing mystery. Could there be more than one case to solve or are they connected? Who will be more persuasive - the debonair detective agent or the charming astrologer? It was a fun read, a dangerously exciting mystery, and a clean romance with heat!
Amber has made a life for herself in her small hometown. She has to work two part time jobs to make ends meet but she is comfortable, with friends and family near. One friend, actually an ex-boyfriend, is now a famous film actor. When a personal tragedy strikes his life, he asks Amber to keep an eye on the investigation so he can stay out of the spotlight and gossip magazines.
This results in pairing Amber with the sexy special CCIA agent, Charlie.
How far will Amber have to go to help a friend?

Paperback: 256 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1635112474
E-Book ASIN: B0731M7RRM

Southerners keep their secrets swept under the rug, but what happens when that rug goes up for sale?
Bestselling author Berlye Stone, the most famous citizen to ever come out of Cottonwood, Kentucky, has died and put all her worldly possessions up for auction, but not without leaving one more manuscript behind. A hidden tell-all about Cottonwood that’s got more gossip than a ladies’ luncheon.
When Beryle’s assistant turns up with an ax in her back and the only witness is in a coma, Sheriff Kenni Lowry reckons someone in town will do anything to keep the manuscript from seeing the light of day. Her poppa’s ghost returns to help piece together the life of the Beryle he once knew, but his memory’s a little foggy, and any misstep could cause them a world of trouble. With the help of Deputy Finn Vincent, can Kenni sort through the secrets buried in Beryle’s books, or will this be her final chapter?

This series keeps getting better and better. It is still election season and Kenni must keep up appearances as well as keep down crime. Her ghost partner/grandfather Poppa is still trying to figure out how things work and how he is able to assist Kenni in her town duties.
Deputy Finn is feeling more in his comfort zone, both as a law officer in a small southern town, and as a man with interest in Kenni beyond being his boss.
If you have not read the previous books in this series I strongly suggest you grab them as well but you can read this as a stand alone. There is so much going on that you won't have time to miss what came before. Did I mention Kenni's meddling mama?
A local town celebrity has passed away. Rumor is she has written a tell-all novel that identifies people and secrets. Could they be secrets worth killing to keep quiet? Murder is never welcome but so not needed during an election period!
Figuring out who has the motive takes teamwork -- even the local inn's parrot helps out.
A surprising hero pops up at the end. You'll be glued to the pages waiting to learn who dunit and why.

I acccepted a copy of this book in exchange for review

Ditched at the altar, Shelby Hart tosses down her bouquet, quits her job, and accepts a position as gardener and event coordinator at an upscale retirement community. Her first day on the job results with a dead body in the greenhouse under the orchids and with her as the prime suspect!
Toss in a handsome handyman, quirky characters, and a flirtatious grandma and the fun never stops.

HOW I MOVED ON AFTER BEING JILTED

Here I am, Shelby Hart, sitting at the church in my wedding dress and no groom. This was supposed to be a good day. The best ever!

No problem.   I tossed down my bouquet and stormed out.    What to do now?

After days of wallowing in self-pity, I quit my job as a third-grade teacher and took a new job as a gardener for an upscale retirement community. Leave all that is familiar and forge ahead, right? At least that’s what I told myself. I sure didn’t plan on life taking the turn it had on my wedding day or on the day I started my new job.

I might be small, but I’m feisty. So, when I found a dead body and discovered Grandma Ida was moving to the community, I only faltered a bit.  After all, she was so much like Lucille Ball, things never slowed down around her. Things got a little hairy when I accused the handsome maintenance man of murder, but that’s another story altogether.

Is there a moral to my story? I guess it would be…don’t let one unfaithful man steer you away from a truly good one.
Oh, and don’t try to solve murder mysteries. Your life becomes in danger.

This series shows a lot of potential. I liked the characters and the setting. There is a little bit of attraction tension going on between Shelby and the hunky handyman. Too bad their boss also has eyes for him. The seniors in this home do not sit idly by and let life just happen.
It should be fun to see what happens as Shelby feels more comfortable in her role and the center changes to a more exclusive residence.
